Ram 1500 generations, and the Classic overlap that confuses people
There is one genuine trap in shopping a used Ram 1500, and it catches people out regularly. The fourth-generation truck, sold from the 2009 model year through 2018, was replaced by an all-new fifth-generation 1500 for 2019 — but Ram did not stop building the old one. It kept it in production alongside the new truck as the Ram 1500 Classic, sold new into the 2024 model year. That means a 2021 Ram 1500 and a 2021 Ram 1500 Classic are two different trucks from two different generations, sitting in the same search results at similar money.
| Truck | What you are looking at |
|---|
| Ram 1500, 2019 and newer | The fifth-generation design: larger interior, the available 12-inch vertical touchscreen on higher trims, and the eTorque mild-hybrid system offered on both the V6 and the 5.7-liter V8. |
| Ram 1500 Classic | The previous generation, built new alongside the fifth-gen truck into the 2024 model year. Simpler and older, and a perfectly rational choice for a buyer who wants a straightforward work truck at a lower entry point. |
Check for “Classic” in the listing name rather than assuming from the model year — it is the only thing that tells you which truck you are looking at.
Half-ton or heavy duty, gas or Cummins
Ram 1500
The half-ton. Easier to live with for the fifty weeks a year you are not towing, and cheaper to run. If the towing is occasional — a boat to the White River, a trailer a few times a year — this is the better truck.
Ram 2500
A different class of truck, not a bigger 1500. Heavier frame and suspension, and the Cummins 6.7-liter inline-six turbodiesel where the torque arrives low in the rev range.
Ram 3500
The one-ton end, for goosenecks and equipment trailers. If you tow for work, the heavy-duty truck pays for itself in capability and in not being worked to its limit.
It is worth being honest about the other side. A diesel costs more to buy and more to service, the maintenance intervals and fluids are its own discipline, and a heavy-duty truck rides firmer unladen than a half-ton does. Tell us what you pull and how often and we will point you at the right end of the lot rather than the more expensive one.
Towing and payload figures vary by configuration, so check the specific listing.
How a Ram gets ready for our front line
Trucks that come to us do not go straight out front. Three things happen before a Ram is photographed and listed.
Detailing and reconditioning
We keep a detailer on staff whose work covers interior and exterior detailing, and reconditioning where it is warranted — spots and stains out of fabric, headliners and leather, not just a wash.
Everything gets started
Our lot staff start every vehicle on the ground at least twice a week. On a lot with this many heavy-duty trucks that matters more than it sounds like it should; nothing sits long enough to develop the problems that come from sitting.
Road-tested after repair
Our service technicians road-test what they repair before it is signed off, rather than handing it straight back to the front line.
Ask before you drive out
None of that is a certification program and we are not going to dress it up as one. It is simply what happens before a truck is photographed and listed. If you want something specific looked at on a particular Ram, ask us before you drive out — call (870) 256-1600 — and if you want work done after you buy, our service department takes appointments for most vehicles regardless of where they were bought. Shoppers coming from the Stuttgart and Brinkley side have their own directions pages.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best year to buy a used Ram truck?
Start with the generation rather than the year. The fourth-generation Ram 1500 ran from 2009 to 2018; the fifth generation arrived for 2019 with a larger cabin, available 12-inch screen and the eTorque mild-hybrid system. Complicating it, Ram kept building the older truck as the 1500 Classic alongside the new one into the 2024 model year. Work out which generation you want first, because a 2021 and a 2021 Classic are different trucks.
Is a used Ram truck worth buying?
That is decided by the individual truck rather than the badge. What matters is how it was used, whether the servicing was kept up, and whether the configuration suits what you will do with it — particularly on diesels, where maintenance history carries real weight. Our listings show engine, cab, bed and drivetrain for each truck, and we have a service department on site if you want something looked over before you commit.
What is the best Ram truck to buy for towing?
For regular heavy towing, the 2500 or 3500 with the Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel is the configuration most people are looking for, because the low-rev torque is what moves a loaded trailer comfortably. For lighter and less frequent towing, a well-specified 1500 is easier to live with daily and cheaper to maintain. Capacity depends on cab, axle ratio and equipment, so check the individual listing rather than a general figure.
Do you have Ram 2500s and Cummins diesels in stock?
Heavy-duty Rams come through regularly, including Cummins-powered 2500 and 3500 trucks, but diesel trucks move quickly and the stock on any given day is what you see on this page. Call (870) 256-1600 if you want to know what is landing before it is listed — diesel buyers in this part of Arkansas tend to know what they want, and those trucks are often spoken for early.
Are there used Ram trucks near Little Rock under $10,000?
Our price range moves with the inventory, and full-size trucks sit higher in it than sedans do, so the bottom of the Ram range will not always reach that number. Sort the
full inventory by price to see where things land today. If a payment is the real constraint, pre-qualifying through our
credit range page is a faster route to a realistic short list than filtering on sticker price.
What is the difference between a Ram 1500 and a Ram 1500 Classic?
They are different generations sold at the same time. The Ram 1500 from 2019 onward is the fifth-generation truck with the newer body and interior. The Ram 1500 Classic is the previous generation, which Ram continued building new alongside it into the 2024 model year. A Classic is usually the lower-priced way into a late-model Ram, and it is a simpler truck. The model name on the listing is what tells you which one you are looking at.
